It seems, from my own observations, that three categories of posts get deleted: Those way, way off-topic (no, "off-topic ASND post" isn't an oxymoron ;), those violating the SI membership terms, and those that are blank.
It doesn't screw up URLs (good question, though) because each message goes into a global pool and is assigned a permanent number. For example, this post is <https://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=3919746>, meaning that my message was 3,919,746th in all messages in SI. So the relative numbering within the thread doesn't matter.
You're right that there's some randomness to the 40,000, 41,000, 50,000 game, but (a) that makes it fun, and (b) I doubt that's a high priority in Silicon Investor's business model.
Off-topic: Who decides what posts get deleted?
I've noticed occasional renumbering of posts. I presume that this means someone deletes an offensive or misleading post, which results in subsequent posts getting renumbered.
Is my understanding correct? If so, does this screw up URLs to SI posts that we might cut and paste elsewhere? What criteria are used for deletion.
For example, post 40,000 seems to have changed, which hardly seems fair to the winner.
