CANADIAN OILPATCH / CDN PRODUCTION

Crude Oil Production by Type and Markets

Crude oil and equivalent (conventional crude oil, synthetic oil, bitumen
and pentanes) increased by almost three per cent in 1995 from 1994.
In continuing with recent trends, light oil and pentanes declined by
one per cent, while oil sands and conventional heavy oil production
increased by almost 10 per cent. Crude oil and equivalent does not
include propane, butane and ethane, which added another 420
thousand barrels per day in 1995.

Exports of crude oil to the United States in 1995 increased by almost
nine per cent, accounting for 53 per cent of Canadian production.
Canada is the third largest source of U.S. imports of crude oil after
Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. Almost half of Canadian imports come
from the North Sea.

Natural Gas Production and Markets

Canadian natural gas production increased by seven per cent to 5,388
billion cubic feet (bcf) in 1995 largely due to a 10 per cent increase in
exports, to 2,813 bcf. Canadian imports now account for approximately
14 per cent of the United States' natural gas consumption. Natural gas
exports are a major contributor to Canada's trade balance.
