Andy, I have the same model CDR as you. I have it on my secondary IDE controller connector on the motherboard. (Master, no other devices on the secondary)

I just put in a SCSI CDROM, for better preformance with the IDE CDR. I chained the SCSI CDROM to my SCSI ZIP and then to the SCSI card that came with the ZIP. I think it is a ZOOM card. SCSI rules !!

I agree with you about Sony. And I agree with you about ZIP (King of the hill for now).

It is my personal opinion that Iomgea should start reducing the cost of their products.

Love my HP 7200 CDR, BUT, I still love my ZIP(s)!!! All three of them.
