DVD, "A Killer App."............................

Ever wanted to swoop low over the plains of Serengeti, or skim the snow-capped mountains of the Andes? Well just make sure that your next PC is a Pentium II with AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port, Intel's new graphics wizardry). That's the message from Dorling Kindersley. With its Eyewitness World Atlas, the company is one of the first companies in the world to really exploit the capabilities of the Pentium II.

DK's first DVD-ROM title will be available in a few weeks time; it will be bundled with new Pentium II machines that feature AGP. We have not yet seen the title but Intel are reputed to be raving about it as 'the best disc ever'.

Users can fly around the world, thanks to high-performance 3D graphics that allow real-time flythrough over detailed and texture-rich landscapes drawn from a massive 2.5 Gb cartographic database. Labels pop up as you fly over the landscape, highlighting major landmarks. One click on the labels takes the user to a detailed map where facts and figures can be easily accessed. Over 30 videos from around the world are displayed in full-screen MPEG-2. Also the new AGP technology allows spectacular 2D graphics. Seamless links to a private Web site allows the user to keep up-to-date with information from around the globe, with a vast list of URLs linked to each country.

The executive producer on World Atlas is Valerie Buckingham (no relation to Alan Buckingham, DK Multimedia's head). She is in no doubt that it's going to be a winner; she quotes one manufacturer who said "This is the Killer App." World Atlas is the first in a long line of DVD-ROMs that will start appearing in the autumn.
