Caching is the process where redundant Internet traffic (duplicate requests for URL's) is saved at the server. This means that if 2 Million people are requesting the same web page, the request does not have to be dispatched 2 million times to a server clear across the country. The request is only made once or every so often , depending upon the dynamic nature of the web site.

Caching is going to be huge in Europe. This is because bandwidth between countries and bandwidth to the US (where 60% of their hits go to) is so expensive. I went to ISPcon (ISP convention) last week and all the Europeans are onto this caching concept as a way to save money. One of the largest Brazilian ISP's told me, (in a very thick Portuguese accent)..."if you don't have good cache, you are dead".

In the US markets, the main selling point of caching is quality of service, or happy ISP customers. Bandwidth is relatively cheap here , so the savings (if you cache redundant traffic) are not that enormous. However, the ability to deliver a web page to a customer at a much faster rate( compared to the rate it would be delivered if your request has to run all the way across the country to a server) equates to HAPPY customers. ISP's want happy customers. Happy customers = less churn. Less churn= happy WS analysts.
Happy analysts= higher ISP stock prices.

I expect to see a lot of journalist starting to write about caching very soon . :-)
