Jeff,
I used to think that I knew the company well but this free fall over the past year or so caught me off guard. I will take a stab at your questions, but please understand that my responses are only my opinions and not hard facts.

<Since you know the company well, what is your general opinion of Cabletron? They have always figured out how to compete. Do you think the company is still capable of turning things around? How bad are things really at the company? Are things as bad as the yahoo and SI seem to think? Cabletron has been such a top notch performer for so many years it is hard for me believe that the company is in that bad a condition. This last quarterly report was there first loss in years. I agree that they have had 3 bad quarters, but it seems to me that the networking sector in general is doing poorly. Networking certainly has a bright future. I would enjoy hearing your opinions.>

I thought that Cabletron was on the right path when they hired Don Reed. I never met the man but from what I heard at the time and knowing his background I thought he was the 'White Knight' and would add the professional management that Cabletron sorely needed. I always got a kick out of Bob Levine but as Cabletron became a major factor in networking Bob's cowboy antics became a liability with Wall Street's stuffed shirts.

Cabletron had and still has some of the most talented workers in the industry. This is a definite plus but their morale is at an all time low. Craig has got to step to the plate and deliver his vision to both his workers and customers to restore some confidence.

Cabletron was late to the party when it came to adopting the reseller channels as I indicated in an earlier post. If they are going to survive they need to be serious and support the channels and not undercut them. I believe they realize this and are going to make this work.

Cabletron was a little late to the acquisition trend and didn't do a very good job with integration in a few instances. But I think that their switching product line is superior to the competition. Pricing has always been a problem but I think they are working on that.

Overall, I have a wait and see attitude with Cabletron right now.

IMHO,

Steve
