A Look into a Companies Internal Operations through their employment advertizing.....
One way I try to obtain an insight into a company's operations and management's business plan is to periodically view the published open employment positions. Novell has over the last several months advertized for software engineers, Internet/Java developers, internal administration staff including software royalty and licensing positions, and other similiar staff positions.
I usually look at our Sunday Paper, The San Jose Mercury News where many high tech Silicon Valley jobs are posted.
I have come accross a new position in today's paper which futher confirms my view that many of the internal departments lack management direction and cross departmental communication. In other words, the left hand may not know what the right hand is doing AND perhaps some of these dealings (negotiatings, purchases, contracts ???) may not have been authorized and/or are duplicated accross departments and/or upper management not informed.
I am only guessing but this posted position raises my concern. The text of the add appears as follows: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER - Sunday October 27, 1996
"Working with the Internal Communication team in San Jose, you'll develop and implement Novell's companywide internal communication plan; with special emphasis on creating print and electronic publishing, InnerWeb linkages and face-to-face communication initiatives.
You'll need a BA in journalism, communications or related field, a minimum three years experience in a high-tech communications position (writing and editing articles for publication), strong interviewing and reporting techniques. The proven ability to manage projects with excellent follow-through and general knowledge of electronic publishing essential."
====================================================================== What makes this add even more interesting, is the resumes are to be mailed to the Provo, UT facility rather than to the San Jose HR department. Is this directive comming from UTAH and CEO Marengi. As I recall, all of the previous postings were processed directly at the San Jose facility.
More Food for Thought....If such a position IS implemented, NOVELL San Jose would be in touch with corporate "real-time" and could be the result of proactive forward looking management. Nah... I doubt it.
Any thoughts...
