No, we compete head to head with IBM, so, that wouldn't make sense, would it? Actually, the third S390 vendor, Hitachi Data Systems, does buy their S390 CPU chips from IBM. That blew me away when it came to light. Business decision, obviously. What do we use?
For desktop and console for the mainframe product: Pentium MMX, going to Pentium II for desktop now, probably to Celeron, Mendocino version about 4Q98, for the console.
For development using AutCAD, Pro E, Solid works: dual Pentium Pro.
For CAE, dual Pentium Pro PC's (many seats)as front end to mainframe.
I think finance and accounting use PII or PPro. In any case, they are all Intel.
For NT server product, Pentium Pro 200 MHZ with 2 MB cache, up to 30 PPros in a box, going to Deschutes 400 MHz, and beyond, about 3Q98, still up to 30 CPU's in a box.
For the mainframe product, Amdahl/Fujitsu joint development CMOS S390 CPU, IOP, etc. chips, 0.25 micron technology, about the same transistor count on a chip as Pentium II, 240 MHz clock frequency (across the entire machine).
Of course, this is a snapshot as of today, 4/1/98. It will all be different a year from now, with more and Moore processing power and higher clock frequencies, always.
Now that I've gone open kimono, why don't some of the rest of you guys do the same?
