Re -- is Bay to Cisco what AMD is to Intel?

No. Intel has a dominant position in a relatively mature chip making industry (x86 is the standard).

Cisco doesn't have a lock on any aspect (other than the soon to be obsolete routers) of the networking industry which is rapidly evolving with new standards and new paradigms.

Thus if Bay moves faster than cisco, it could chip away at the old block.
