Don't you think Intel can get away with doing this and maintaining margins as the higher end chips hit the market?

Yes. As long as people are willing to pay the premium for buying the chips at the time when they are the most expensive.

The danger is that people will realize that your latest and greatest chip which costs $900 when it is released becomes a $300 chip in 6 months. Your average consumer may just decide to buy the latest and greatest chip 6 months after it's release and save a bundle.
