Hi Elmo

It seems a bit too ambigious for such a large question, doesn't it? The use of words like "should" used in this type of article doesn't exactly inspire confidence. If I were in front of a customer and told them that their servers or applications "should" work after the year 2000 roll over I'd get roasted!

MS seem to be putting out a lot of bitty responses to this question. They don't seem to have a single, cohesive answer as if they haven't properly project managed the testing. If someone asked me to put in writing that a server sold with NT4 would handle Y2K, I couldn't. I could vouch for the hardware, but that's about it!

If you take a look at Novell's criteria for Y2K testing

novell.com

you can see that they've specified exactly what they're testing. With this in mind, a customer can determine if these tests are enough for them in light of what they're using. Saying something like

"Applications designed in Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, and so on, *should* not have this type of trouble as they all include a date field that goes beyond just two digits."

(from the article you quoted, my asterisks) isn't an answer of any use.

As I've said before, If MS knew that everything was ok, they'd shout it from the rooftops. I've never known them to hold back before :-)

Regards

Peter
