Duane, thanks for the link. It sounds interesting, but I am not sure that there is a great need for such a thing. Generally, I check more than just the cholesterol anyway, and each patient doesn't need to get their cholesterol checked frequently enough to avoid a needle stick. Noone wants to get stuck by a needle, but it isn't that big of a deal to most adults. (Even heroine addicts frequently say that they hate needles. It's just a means to an end.)

It would be nice if some day we could have a device that you could hold over the patient and learn anything you need to know about them, after making a whirling sound, but that is a while off. If Star Trek is the guide, we have to wait until the 23rd century .

BTW, Surgeons would have the least use for a cholesterol skin test. There is nothing urgent or emergent about cholesterol. We treat it for effects that are expected months, and more specifically, years later. Cholesterol is followed mainly by Cardiologists, Internists, and Generalists/Family Practitioners.
