Okay folks, time for some more Hotlinks for those who wish to explore this fascinating field:

A to Z of a gem diamond deposit:
archangeldiamond.com
Including, "Testing the Kimberlite -
Unlike gold deposits, diamonds are not uniformly distributed throughout the kimberlite but occur randomly with a 'nugget' effect being very obvious. The value of a tonne of ore is a function of not only the grade of mineralisation but also the value of the diamonds found in that tonne of ore. Bear in mind that a one carat sized diamond (the size of a small pea) randomly dispersed in 1 x 1 x 0.5 metres of kimberlite (1 tonne) is an unusually high grade. Finding that 'pea' with a 112mm diametre wide drill core is, quite obviously, very difficult and needs a high degree of experience and professional expertise from all members of the exploration team. As with any statistically challenging evaluation problem, confidence in diamond grade increases with the amount of sample recovered and distribution of the sample sites.
