Andrew,
5.25" and 3.5" have one similarity, both media are cheap enough to give away! This is why I said it would be nice if IOM release a low-cost 10MB zip disk which can be bought for $2-$3. In addition, 3.5" media is more reliable than 5.25" floppy and it is the standard floppy in Mac. Backward compatibility is not critical factor for floppy replacement but it is a very propellent factor.

Before you see zip becomes the standard, you will first see software publishers distributing drivers/updates or even small applications on Zip along with a floppy disk coupon, otherwise floppy is still the standard. Or in other way, when majority of the PC equipped with zip as standard component and floppy as an option.
