My reading is slightly different. Microsoft will make it easier to run networked PC's off of internets. How they will do it is not exactly clear.

Intel's move is more defensive, IMHO. Andy Grove pinpointed the Achilles heel of the NC in his recent "Paranoia" book, when he said that NC's will have to use slower chips in order to be alot cheaper than PC's. I believe Intel's recently announced networking effort is more important. Getting the costs of running networks down is the best way to defend against the NC.

Also, while Andy doesn't think the NC will fly and will not be a "strategic inflection point" like the internet, Intel has a project going to make one.
