Part of the responsibilities of a good marketing person is to make sure they fully understand everything there is to know about their competition. Having worked in marketing and been in quite a few high-technology product wars, it was very common to have press releases pre-written awaiting a competitors move. Once they moved, the press release was sent. Very common practice -- just good defense to shut down an offense. I guess that would be an MM (marketing manipulation).
