Suppose I should post one more before my trail period runs out :) ITC^Deltacom traded power companies installed fiber for ROW. The parent company itchold.com also owns 20% of a PCS company called POWERTEL :) Wonder who holds the other 80%? It also has 29% of a company called knology knology.com that offers bunded cable, telephone (long dist and local), internet and soon digital "near video on demand". This arangement has been underway for years. I'd imagine that all power companies have similar agreements already in place. No "new" announcements, just reminders to jog your memory. ITC^Deltacom has a fiber optic network built on power company high transmission lines, the really big ones. They pull the fiber into the wire that runs along the tops of the towers. Put in with helicopters no less. To quote from deltacom.com "IFN's fiber optic network is constructed primarily along electric utility company right of way and the fiber is contained within the static wire attached at the top of the high power transmission lines that traverse the countryside. This design provides for increased reliability as the right of way provides limited access and the placement of the fiber approximately 60-80 feet above ground minimizes the chances of unintentional disruptions. The fiber optic network is a combination of owned and operated facilities as well as those that we market, manage and monitor for the electric utilities. Current fiber route miles across the Southeast are in excess of 5,000 miles with another 1,200 miles scheduled for completion in 1997-98." Check out their fiber map, deltacom.com cheers!
