Government buys Corel programs for schools
TORONTO (CP) - The Ontario government will be injecting much-needed cash into Corel Corp., the embattled software maker that started bleeding red ink after it decided to compete head-to-head with Microsoft.

Ottawa-based Corel has been chosen to supply all of Ontario's public elementary and high schools with business software, the provincial Education Ministry announced Thursday.

The deal will be worth $495,000, which means each school will get the Corel WordPerfect Suite of word processing and spreadsheet programs for about $99 each. That's quite a deal, considering the software retails for about $399.

The software will be used by as many as 2.5 million students in 5,000 schools.

WordPerfect Suite was chosen because it includes Corel Presentations, software that enables users to prepare business presentations and post them on the Internet, said education officer John Taylor.

Patsy Hogan, head of Corel's global sales, said the company won the contract because "our products are seen as easier to use, more functional and one of the most cost effective academic offerings in the industry."
