I can tell you this was a major decision factor for me. Living in a major US city or even a crowded suburban area has gotten to be so dangerous in our lifetime that I decided a longer commute time for me was worth the peace of mind gained from living 60 miles away from the "action". I hope you and your wife can feel safer with a dog ( or two).
