Motorola reports first, so I'm hoping for a pullback when they "surprise" the Street. There are persistent rumours about Ericsson's handset sales softness in Europe as well, so if that segment's sales growth slows to under 40% in the first quarter the news could hit Noka as well. Nokia reports last as usual and we should now see the first signs of whether they have started to eat Ericsson's lunch yet. Dataquest just came out with its -97 market share estimates and Mot had 22%, Noka 21% and Ericy 16% of the global phone market. Looks like Ericy couldn't catch up with Nokia while they had a fresh product line-up... this year the gap should grow. Nokia has made very bullish comments about the 6100 line... the most recent indicating they have to boost Chinese production to meet unanticipated demand. It's anyone's guess whether Mot crashes below 20% this year and whether Ericy can catch up with it if that happens. But we should see Nokia reach 22-24% and getting the top spot finally should change the stock price dynamics. A recent Fortune article once again grossly distorted the numbers by claiming that Mot has 30% of the world market share in handsets. I think the international investors have yet to adjust to the changes in global market place. Nokia's persisting low P/E ratio
shows that old attitudes die hard.
