Paul and thread, Article...Fujitsu (6702) and Sun Microsystems To Develop PC Server OS.. April 3, 1998 Nikkei English News : TOKYO (Nikkei)--Fujitsu Ltd. and Sun Microsystems Inc. announced that they will jointly develop operating systems (OS) for personal computer (PC) servers.
This year, the companies are aiming to commercialize Solaris, a UNIX-based OS, for Intel Corp's 32-bit Pentium II microprocessor successor. In parallel, the companies also plan to develop a Solaris OS for Intel's 64-bit microprocessor, Merced, which is scheduled to become available in 1999.
Despite the fact that PC server systems offer a high cost/performance ratio, system stability is often a problem, and most businesses prefer to configure their main business systems with mainframes or UNIX servers.
Microsoft Corp. has already begun marketing a Windows NT-based OS for PC servers, but Fujitsu and Sun Microsystems plan to compete on the stability and robustness of software applications available that run on their UNIX-based OS. ______________________________________________________________________
