>>> I do know that, although it was a while back, EMC and CNT have worked hand in hand before. Can anyone recall that and what it was about? <<<
Charlie, maybe this is what you recall...
EMC AND CNT ANNOUNCE JOINT DEVELOPMENT FOR REMOTE DATA MIRRORING OVER EXTENDED DISTANCES Leading Storage and Networking Companies to Enhance Continuous Operations for Critical Business Information Minneapolis, MN -- January 16, 1997 -- EMC Corporation, Hopkinton, MA, the world's leading provider of intelligent information storage and retrieval systems, and Computer Network Technology Corporation (CNT), Minneapolis, MN, an established worldwide leader in the development of high-performance networking products for the enterprise, today announced a joint development agreement under which the two companies have developed plan to create interoperability between acclaimed EMC's acclaimed Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) business continuance software, and CNT's popular Channelink networking product line. Beta testing with selected customers is underway.
Commenting on the announcement, Thomas G. Hudson, President and CEO of CNT said, "Our customers asked us for this capability and we're delighted to provide a CNT solution to meet their needs. We are excited about this new relationship with EMC for two reasons. First, EMC is a fine organization with many talented and committed people and second, CNT is becoming increasingly recognized for its capability to provide solutions which facilitate today's overwhelming need for connectivity across a wide range of systems architectures." SRDF is a high-performance, host-independent business continuance solution that enables EMC customers to maintain a duplicate copy of all or some of their data at a remote site. Data from a primary Symmetrix system is "mirrored" to a secondary Symmetrix located in the next building, across town or virtually anywhere in the world. In the event of an interruption at the primary site, full operation can resume at the secondary site in a matter of minutes. Other solutions can take hours or days to restore full operations.
"SRDF's business continuance capabilities and market penetration make it the world's most successful business continuance solution for computing where downtime is not an option," said Richard Blaschke, EMC's Vice President of Product Marketing. "The addition of CNT's Channelink will give SRDF customers additional flexibility for configuring remotely mirrored Symmetrix systems in support of critical business operations."
SRDF software provides local and remote mirroring through EMC's high-performance, intelligent Symmetrix family of Integrated Cached Disk Arrays (ICDA) for mainframe environments as well as the world's most popular UNIX-based servers, PC LAN servers and AS/400 platforms.
The CNT Channelink family of products provides high-performance data channel connectivity over unlimited distance networks. Channelink supports ESCON and SCSI channel interfaces, as well as high-speed WAN services such as DS3, E3, SMDS, and ATM. CNT will leverage its expertise in high-speed, long-distance data movement to support SRDF over a variety of network infrastructures. "EMC has continued to build on our architectural approach and delivered customers the solutions they need, when they need them," added Blaschke. "Many of the world's most prominent players across government, financial, telecommunications, transportation and a range of other industries rely on EMC's SRDF software and Symmetrix enterprise storage systems to ensure they have continuous access to their information. These leaders have one thing in common: They have the most to gain from continuous business operation and the most to lose in the event of a business interruption."
EMC's full range of business continuance solutions includes advanced disaster recovery and data center moves/consolidations through SRDF mirroring; non-disruptive data migration through the company's Symmetrix Data Migration Services (SDMS); mainframe back-up of UNIX servers through FDR/SOS, developed in conjunction with Innovation Data Corporation; high-speed network server backup through the EMC Data Manager (EDM); and the unique Symmetrix scalable availability, enabling customers to apply various levels of data protection on the same Symmetrix system. No other vendor offers this extensive range of business continuance solutions.
