I've never bought currency futures but if you want to play a particular market and want a guarantee on principal take a look into Merrill Lynch MITTS they are issued at $ 10 and track a certain index.
Example symbol JEM tracks the Nikkei and is $ 10 x (Nikkei/21,000) x 110% trades at 8 11/16 matures in 2003 I think. Even if the Nikkei goes to 0 you get $ 10 back. Theres one that track S&P 500 etc. ML is able to do this because the buy STRIPS for pricncipal payment and index futures with the difference to get to $ 10.
