>>What exactly does beta mean? <<

Beta testing is the last stage of product testing before it's released to the general public. The beta testers use the drives in the real world with real computer setups doing real things. In Orb's case, this means running digital video as much as twice as fast as Jaz!

Every tech device goes through beta testing to iron out kinks in either hardware or software design. Windows98 is being beta tested right now. Jaz 2 was beta tested for half a year- due to many problems with it's backward compatibility with Jaz 1. The testament that Orb is being shipped to the general public after only 1 month of beta testing speaks very well of its engineering.

>>What's to say Iomega wont drop the price of Jaz drives to $199 retail and $33 per disk? <<

Orb STILL kills Jaz even if they lower the price. Orb is 2.16 Gigs. The drive costs $199, and a cart costs $29. And, it is much, much faster than Jaz as well due to its use of MR tech. The Orb is light-years beyond Jaz technologically speaking.
