Regionalisms. When I spent a year in Pittsburgh PA, I learned of the Participle Swap.
Instead of saying "Your car needs washing", they'll say "Your car needs washed." At first, this set my teeth on edge. But with time, the poetry of the form rubbed off on me. Now every so often, I'll indulge in a Participle Swap and watch the faces of the quicker wits around me.
