More on the backing of progressive scan by Fox and ABC.......
techweb.cmp.com

<<Padden said ABC chose 720p for high-definition programming because it
offers the "highest picture quality of any available format," and because the
network believes "the future of HDTV is inherently progressive."

For its part, Fox will reportedly focus on the 480-line progressive format
while offering some 720p programming. Calling interlaced formats
"obsolete" and "dead ends," Andy Setos, executive vice president of the
News Technology Group, said, "At Fox, we see DTV as a whole new
communication medium."

Neither ABC or Fox will offer the 1,080-line interlaced scanning format
favored by CBS, NBC and other HDTV proponents.>>

<<Emphasizing that the decision to go with progressive scanning was an
engineering one, Padden said ABC believes interoperability with the world
of computers is important. He also said the 720p format is compatible with
the digital devices being developed by the cable industry.

"Historically we've gone to Hollywood for programming, but there's no
shame in going to Redmond," said Saul Shapiro, vice president of
broadcast technology for ABC Broadcast Operations & Engineering,
referring to Microsoft Corp.'s hometown. Shapiro said ABC's vote for
720p was about "positioning ourselves for the future for any boxes and ICs
that emerge to deliver programming."

Likewise, Setos of Fox foresees datacasts to PCs and laptops.>>
