9G for 6 platters, then it is 1.5 G/p. This is MR also.

Confirmed. That's the highest-end for WDC at this point. (See WDC's website for details.) The price is somewhere around $800-900, which is in line with SEG and IBM, depending on the type of interface.

They also have a 3-platter 6.4GB and a 2-platter 4.3 GB EIDE drives that goes for $300 and $250, respectively. They're selling the 5.1GB and the 3-platter 4.0GB EIDE drives for $280 and $220, respectively. They're all priced about in line with other manufacturers. For example, Maxtor DiamondMax line are selling 4.3GB for $200, 5.1GB for $260, 5.7GB for $270, and 6.4GB for $290. They also got a host of other SCSI-config drives with competition from IBM/SEG/QNTM/Maxtor...

At the low-end, pricing is just brutal for everyone. WDC's 2.6GB EIDE drive sells for $180 but Maxtor DiamondMax 2.8GB is going for $160 after rebate. I think the problem for WDC (SEG and QNTM as well) is the lag in areal density to Maxtor. Maxtor had figured out how to put 2.8GB on a single platter while forcing WDC to sell 2-platter 2.6GB drive around the same price. That's sure to be a money losing business if they can't catch up.

BTW, all pricing above are retail pricing quoted from warehouse.com as of 4/3/98.
