I think there's actually a few more examples of homosexual activity in the animal kingdom (other than humans and rats). Please, anyone, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think dolphins and some monkeys (Bonobos?) are such examples.
I don't actually consider relevant any appeals to the "natural" world for examples on what humans should or should not do; unless the example is relevant to the human condition. It seems that for every "good" example, there is a "bad" example (and vice-versa). Examples that may be relevant, however, include the rise in violence among some monkey populations forced into overcrowding in some zoos. Perhaps, homosexuality is affected in some way (environmental? genetic? psychological? Satan? - No, I don't believe that one; just putting it in for completeness.) by overcrowding. Natural population control? I don't believe the examples I gave of "animal" homosexuality were results of overcrowding, as opposed to your example of rats.
I don't think it's very constructive or educational to create monkey-men. My initial reaction is that it isn't something people should do... but I'm not sure exactly why. The issue is, of course, the offspring. Will it receives the rights (given by society) of a man or merely a monkey? Weird indeed!
