COREL SUIT HEADS TO U.S. COURT
Corel Corp. will appear in Dallas court Wednesday for an
injunction hearing launched by Texas-based Micrografx Inc.
Micrografx wants Corel to stop selling its latest version of Print
House Magic 3, because it infringes the "look and feel" of its
American Greetings CreataCard software.
The proceeding, headed by Judge Buchmeyer, senior judge for
the northern district of Texas, will hear testimony and
depositions.
It's not expected the court will deliver a ruling on the injunction
immediately, though a decision may come in about two weeks.
Meanwhile, Micrografx will continue its pursuit of a lawsuit to
hear allegations that Corel took features from its software and
infringed source code. The company is also examining Corel's
latest Print House Magic Deluxe which includes graphics, photos
and animated on-line greeting cards.
"We're looking into that with a great deal of interest," said Ed
Pearce, Micrografx vice-president of corporate development and
general counsel. Micrografx has sold more than four million
copies of CreataCard since 1996.
A Feb. 12 effort at mediation between the two firms failed.
