I also see a drastic need for investment for the Y2k problem. However, why would the focus be on hardware? The Y2k problem resides not in hardware but in software.

If a companies IT budget requires this situation to be fixed why would the budget be increased for hardware also?

I suspect that the trend will be for the hardware aspect of the budget to be cannibalized for the sake of the software fix.

Of course I could be wrong and all of the companies out there will just open their checkbooks and say "go ahead and spend as much as you want for anything you want." But I don't think so.
