Short selling requires 50 percent margin. For 2,000 shares of DELL at $68, I needed $68,000 cash or treasury bills in my account. If DELL goes down from $68, my margin goes down 50 percent as much. Vice versa also.

There is no time limit for buying stock back. The lack of time pressure is the reason I like short selling more than buying puts.
