My parents were immigrants. Never took much care of themselves medically...but I had to go through the "drill", as it were.

The dentists I was sent to were medical nightmares. One had gone to grammar school with my older brother. Obviously hated him, and was jealous that he was making out well in his career. Ever hear the (Carlin?) jokes about how the dentist asked you rude questions while your mouth is so wired up you cannot respond? I finally flew out of there once when I was about 12 and refused to return...to him, anyway.

But it is no surprise to me that I avoid medical care and only see a dentist when I feel like it. Not after a childhood of torture. I went to one in Sea Cliff, Long Island for a few years because he was pretty good. However, I no longer go to any medical type who makes me wait in an office for extended periods.

Also, I probably have some of my parents' peasant blood. There have been times I have been pretty banged up and ignored it. Once I hurt a wrist in Karate class....all night long (after I hurt it) the teacher was having us practice wrist breaks (controlling an opponent using his wrist, I think it's a form of Aikido....Steven Seagal mostly uses Aikido in his movies). Three days later I played golf with it. On the fourth day my wife practically forced me to get an X-Ray. Sure enough, snapped in two places.

Really fouled up my handicap, I can tell you.
