>>Why are they setting the public up for the "whisper number"?

Whisper numbers are unofficial estimates circulating around the Street, many time by analysts as personal hunches. They don't come from any fresh guidance the company gives.

The earnings are going to be what they are, and the stock is going to do whatever it does. I don't get caught up in whisper numbers.

Lastly, don't bank on Media Central. I don't know where they get their "facts", but they're not from Yahoo, plus if you adjust their February estimates for the 10% fewer days in the month from January, there was significant growth. As I remember, Media Central's numbers were dead wrong in the fourth quarter.

In any event, Yahoo is obviously a long-term story. From Cowan's report:

Internet advertising, around $900 million in 1997, is expected grow to $7.7 billion in 2002, according to Jupiter Communications.
