Bob, homosexuals are simply people attracted to those of the same sex. Much has been done lately about identifying the gene which causes homosexuality. There is an interesting article in Health Magazine this month about one study which seems to indicate that homosexuality is inherited through the mother, only, in fact. Science is moving very fast to find out what makes some people homosexual, but it is definitely something that is inherited, or happens prenatally, or in very early childhood. These people are not "perverted", and are not sinners. It will be interesting to see what all you religious people who hate homosexuals will be able to say once it is clear that homosexuality is a trait, not a choice, and that these people are, if anything, disabled. Do you automatically hate and scorn people who are in wheelchairs, for example?
While people who are misinformed, ignorant, or hateful continue to lump homosexuals and child abusers together, they are absolutely two totally different groups of people. Child molesters are emotionally ill, often from being abused as children, themselves. Child molesting happens very often in Christian families, just as it does in non-Christian families. It is a kind of behavior which is compulsive and is repeated over and over again, often with increasing violence. While the state of Washington is doing experiments with child molesters to see if they can be cured, or treated to the point that they can be released from prison without molesting more children, there is a lot of debate on this issue. Child molesters often molest male and female children, incidentally.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of Catholic priests who molest alter boys, and other children who are entrusted to them, both boys and girls. Obviously, being a religious person is totally irrelevant to whether you are a child molester, since this is so prevalent among priests.
You make a huge mistake when you prejudice yourself against homosexuals because you find child molesters repugnant. A homosexual is no more likely to molest a child than is a heterosexual. Child molesting is a compulsive illness, and has absolutely nothing to do with sexual identity. |
