S.I. Grammarians I need your help. eom posed this question:

In the late 60s there was a band called "Lothar and the Hand People". Who is/was Lothar?

and he gave this answer:

Lothar" was a brand of theremin. Lothar was the theremin in the band. That is the answer.

eom didn't ask What is/was Lothar, he asked Who is/was Lowther. Who always refers to a person not a thing. Lothar was a theremin. A theremin is a thing. Therefore the question was completely misleading...the question could not be answered if one answered it based on its grammatical construction.
