There is a diagnostic line at USR... 3com.com It's an X2 line, so if you can't connect to that at X2 speeds, you probably are limited by your local line. The usual problem with the local lines is a kind of remote switch concentrator that's often used in newer suburbs. It provides dial tone to a number of homes, and then has a few higher-speed (usually T1) cables back to the main switch. Unfortunately, many of these units include an extra analog-digital conversion somewhere in them. The newest don't... they're all digital... but many installed in the last 15 years do. I have one myself... I'm limited to 28,800 (usually 26,400) because of such a unit myself. On the other hand, the X2 modem upgrade got me better connections... and the V.90 upgrade I downloaded a week or two ago seems to work better yet. I heard that there were a bunch of general fixes for the lower speeds in some of those downloads. Your mileage may vary, of course. Dick
