Sure but moving Sun higher and higher into the server market is
precisely what Wintel is trying to do. The point is Intel and
Microsoft have to penetrate the midrange server market in order to
grow as usual. So Intel will make an assault with new hardware
technology (eg. Merced, hotswapping, I2O, etc) which will allow Oracle
to run on Intel instead of Sun.

The market perception is Intel hardware is open and Sun hardware is
proprietary. In order for Sun to fend off Wintel they must come up
with a compelling new software story of their own which is Java.

My criticism of Sun is they have made so many dumb mistakes with all
this NC baloney. The focus of Java has been on client side GUI stuff
for applets and applications. They thought they could knock off the
PC before they fixed the management problems. But the NC effort has
been a failure.

The focus should have been a componentized webserver architecture
right from the beginning. Now they are focused on web middleware
but they should be a mile ahead of Microsoft in this area and are not
because of inept management caused by their stupid PC envy.

Can you believe that at the Sun book site they don't have a single
book coming soon about server side Java? Instead its JFC, Javastation
(which has been delayed yet again to August), and Javastudio.
