C-Cube Expands Professional Digital Video Opportunities With Single-Chip 4:2:2 Codec
DVxpert 6110 Delivers Editing, Ad Insertion and Video Manipulation Capabilities
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1998--C-Cube Microsystems (NASDAQ:CUBE - news) today introduced the industry's first single-chip MPEG-2 4:2:2 digital video codec, bringing professional-level video applications to new users.
The highly-integrated DVxpert 6110 incorporates both 4:2:2 professional profile encoding and decoding functions in a single-chip, reducing the overall system cost and complexity of studio contribution and distribution systems. By providing a high-performance and cost-effective platform for professional studio applications, C-Cube brings studio editing, ad insertion and video manipulation to a new class of users.
The DVxpert 6110 incorporates C-Cube's patented PerfectView algorithm, allowing broadcast equipment suppliers to achieve the industry's highest compression ratio and image quality, while reducing deployment costs. The product's dual-stream MPEG-2 decoding capabilities allow video professionals to view two streams of video simultaneously, a critical feature for studio editing applications. DVxpert also offers the industry's highest compression ratio, enabling customers to maximize the bandwidth efficiency of digital video networks.

PerfectView
PerfectView delivers the industry's highest video quality at any bitrate and provides broadcast video and studio equipment manufacturers with the most flexible platform for professional video applications. PerfectView technology includes pre- and post-filtering, optimized motion estimation, intelligent rate control and improved error masking to eliminate common MPEG artifacts. This technology is based on more than nine years of research and offers selectable parameters including resolution, rate control, GOP (group of pictures) structure and frame rate.
DVxpert 6110 Professional Codec
By maintaining its acclaimed image quality and delivering the industry's highest compression ratio, C-Cube's new DVxpert 4:2:2 codec meets the demands of new and emerging digital television and professional studio applications. DVxpert 6110 makes it possible to store and transmit contribution quality 4:2:2 video at very low bitrates. The single-chip DVxpert 6110 Professional 4:2:2 codec can compress and decompress video images into either MPEG-2 Main-Level@4:2:2 Profile for video distribution applications, or into MPEG-2 Main-Level@Main-Profile for general broadcast applications.
DVxpert offers excellent image quality, making it the premier choice for quality and bandwidth sensitive applications such as studio-to-studio video distribution. This high-quality encoder handles 4:2:2 video streams from 6 to 50 Mbps while supporting the extended video resolution required by the 4:2:2 profile; 608 lines for NTSC and 512 lines for PAL. In addition, C-Cube's superior motion estimation enables DVxpert to achieve a search range of +/- 200 horizontal by +/- 64 vertical resolution.
Availability
C-Cube plans to ship the DVxpert 6110 in volume this summer.
