Pilkington <PILK.L> & SGobain <SGOB.PA> in Colombia move

LONDON, April 6 (Reuters) - Britain's Pilkington Plc <PILK.L> and Saint-Gobain <SGOB.PA> of France announced on Monday they are to join with the Colombian Group, Sur Americana, to build a float glass production line near Bogota in Colombia.
The two European glass makers said they will form a holding company to own a majority share of the plant, which will come on stream in 2000. Saint Gobain will hold a majority stake in the holding company.
The two have existing joint ventures in South America including five float lines -- three in Brazil, one in Argentina and one in Chile, with a total capacity in all three countries of about 700,000 tonnes per year of float glass.
Pilkington said the current level of demand in Colombia is approximately 120,000 tonnes per year.
