Colonial Downs Announces Series of Racing/Concert Doubleheaders

NEW KENT, Va.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--April 6, 1998--Based on the tremendous success of last fall's racing/concert doubleheaders, Colonial Downs has expanded their slate of twin bills to include live entertainment every Friday night at the upcoming harness race season slated to begin Friday April 24th. Five national recording acts and six regional artists will perform in the "Pepsi Concert Series".

Kicking off the "Series" opening night are recent "Rock'N Roll Hall of Fame" inductees, the Mamas & Papas. Known for hits like "California Dreamin", "Monday Monday" and "I Saw Her Again", this '60's supergroup hits the stage at 10:15 PM. on April 24th.

Country/Western veteran performer Lee Roy Parnell graces the Colonial Downs stage on Friday May 15th. Parnell, whose hits include "On The Road", "What Kind Of Fool" and "Lucky Me, Lucky You", is the first of two national country artists to appear as part of the "Pepsi Concert Series".

On May 29th, '60's superstar Gary Puckett invades Colonial Downs to sing hits like "Young Girl", "Woman Woman", "Lady Willpower" and "This Girl Is A Woman Now" among others. Puckett is currently celebrating his 30th anniversary of recording six consecutive gold records. In that year of 1968, Puckett sold more records than any other recording act including The Beatles.

On June 14th, a special Sunday post-race concert will feature two popular groups from the 1960's --- the BoxTops and The Coasters, who were the first group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, back in 1987. The Coasters had four million selling hits that included "Searchin", "Yakety Yak", "Charlie Brown" and "Poison Ivy" while The BoxTops recorded the biggest selling record in the world in 1967, ("The Letter"), and followed with another seven Top 40 hits. Post time on June 14th is 1:00 PM. and the concert will begin approximately 4:30 PM.

The final national act to appear during Colonial's harness racing season is country/western sensation Ty Herndon, who will close out the "Series" Friday June 26th. Herndon brings an impressive resume to the "Old Dominion"---two certified gold albums, two number one singles and two other top five singles.

Six regional bands are slated to play after other Friday evening race cards this spring. The lineup includes The Showmen on May 1st, Slapwater on May 8th, Savannah on May 22nd, Strictly Biz on June 5th, Slick Nickel on June 12th and Janet Martin on June 19th. All Friday night concerts are FREE with the regular $5 track admission and begin at approximately 10:15 PM., shortly after the final harness race is complete. Post time for the first race every Friday is 7:00 PM. For more information, call the New Kent County facility at (804) 966-7223 or visit the Colonial Downs website at colonialdowns.com.
