>>> You cannot execute applications software on a terminal, X Window or otherwise. That's a critical observation with massive ramifications in terms of software power and software design. It has to be Java because it offers the most compelling features of any other system out there: technically, politically, practically. <<<

Technically, politically, practically? What the hell are you talking about? Why does the software have to execute on the client? Why can't it execute on the server? What features does java have that x-windows lacks?

For example, I'm writing this note on a WinFrame client right now. I have the same range of features that anyone in my office who is running NT3.51. The ICA protocol that WinFrame uses is just like the X-Window protocol.

I work in Bermuda, my boss is four thousand miles away in California. he is connecting over the internet to the same winframe server I'm on. He has complete access to all the features as well. All that winframe has to do is pass screen fresh and keyboard and mouse actions. If we were running database apps over that internet connection it would be much slower because it would have to pass considerably more data.

Plus server centric computing is far, far easier to manager then client/server and technically easier to develop and especially test.

So I ask you again, what advantages are there to running java apps on the client?
