in futures markets forward contracts trading at discounts to nearby or spot months does not necessarily imply a downward price movement this "backwardation" can indeed signal a technically tight or "squeezed" market (which is more likely the case in oil right now which everyone and their brother is shorting) conversely, a "contango" market exists when forward prices are higher than spot prices reflecting the cost of carry, more normally associated with a balanced or weak market a better question to ask is why is anyone even watching oil in regards to uti instead of natural gas which represents 70% of revenue and 80% of profits?????
