Lanac amd is going to position themself against pii with k6-3d+ which is supposed to be faster than pII at the same clock. Amd is also due to demo their brand new k7 on slot A which should be positioned for server and high end multiprocessor systems. And I am sure you have heard of new Russian chip that upset Paul so much. Elbrus is the fastest and most advanced chip out there and the development team is working with Sun. Not to mention that alpha chip might get to be more popular since it would be on the same slot as k7. Alpha/k7 combination and sun/Elbrus combination would go after merced market. And it will get only togher. Intel positioning itself against growing competition with proprietory interface while amd/nsm and idti are working on joint standards.
