Bell Canada Intl. to buy 29 pct of Hansol (04/06/98)
MONTREAL, April 6 (Reuters) - BCE Inc. unit Bell Canada International Inc. said on Monday it had signed a memorandum of understanding to buy 29 percent of South Korea's Hansol PCS Co. Ltd. for US$175 million.
Hansol is a nation-wide provider of personal communications services in South Korea. It has more than 800,000 subscribers.
The completion of a definitive agreement is subject to financial and legal due diligence, government and regulatory approvals and board approval, BCI said. The partners hope to finalize an agreement by the end of May.
Hansol is a consortium led by the Hansol Paper Group, and has a number of other Korean investors, including Dacom, Hanwha Group, Ssangyong Group, Gohap Group, Youngpoong and Jindo, BCI said.
"The Korean market holds great potential for BCI and if we are successful in completing an agreement, I believe our technical, operational and financial support can help make this successful start-up company even stronger," said BCI chairman and chief executive Derek Burney in a statement.
