Wi-LAN Introduces Hopper FD 2.4 GHz Wireless Modem
CALGARY, ALBERTA--Wi-LAN, a leading provider of wireless data
communications products and solutions, today announced the
availability of the Hopper FD 2.4 GHz asynchronous RS-232
wireless modem. The FD 2.4 GHz is approved for the
licensed-exempt Industrial, Scientific and Medical band in the 2.4
- 2.4835 GHz range. It is a cost-effective, reliable solution for
transparently sending and receiving data at ranges up to and
exceeding 6 miles, or 10 kilometers in clear line of-sight. The
modem is designed for rugged environments, such as oil rigs, mines
and the factory floor, as well as more traditional business and
financial applications.
The modem utilizes Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum technology and
Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum. The spread spectrum
technology, along with a unique password, virtually eliminates the
possibility of eavesdropping. The Hopper FD modem line is the
industry's only wireless modem to offer both direct sequence and
frequency hopping transmission technologies. Dr. Hatim Zaghloul,
President of Wi-LAN explains, "Hopper FD users benefit from the
consistent high performance of direct sequence in most
environments, while having the option of switching to frequency
hopping in certain high interference situations."
The Hopper FD 2.4 modem offers plug-and-play convenience to any
device with an asynchronous RS-232 serial port, such as a PC.
Features such as center frequency and point-to-multipoint
networking capabilities can be set using any standard
communications program. No additional technical training is
required for installation or use.
Pricing and Availability
The Hopper FD 2.4 GHz Wireless Modem is available in April, 1998.
It is priced at $1265 (US).
