Sounds like Paul Allen is gathering bricks to build a consumer telecom empire. Doesn't he already own a big piece of Teledesic? Cable + Teledesic + Metricom = whole-world coverage, much of it wireless, of telecom & data (Internet) services. He is trying to replace the old, slow-moving phone companies like AT&T by spending in the right places. I would peg Worldcom & Qwest as his biggest competitors, except they are targeting the backbone rather than the end user. The plan is shaping up to be of a grand scale and Metricom is just a tiny piece.
