IntranetWare raises some key questions about the future role of NetWare in corporate networks . IntranetWare does not satisfy the rapidly evolving requirements for internet/intranet . The most fundamental problem with IntranetWare is the NetWare Operating System itself. The NLM architecture has never provided a robust, stable environment for applications. NLM's are hard to build for developers and hard to support and maintain for network managers. . NetWare servers good for traditional NOS functions and the NLM's are limited to system-level services and utilities. As a result, the flaws in the NLM architecture can be forgiven. But Intranet servers must provide a development platform for a dynamic content. . The NetWare OS simply is not a good foundation for such dynamic environment. . If NDS users log in via an HTML browser, their passwords are passed over the wire in the insecure uuencode format. . The NetWare Web Server also lacks support for multiple virtual sites, full text search and ODBC support. . NOVL has yet to provide full firewall and proxy server capabilities. . Finally, few third party developers are building NLM-based tools and services. On NT and UNIX, a wide variety of products, ranging from shareware to commercial enterprise products, are already available with more on the way.
