NEW YORK, March 31 (Reuters) - Prilosec, Merck Astra Inc's anti-ulcer
drug, became the number one selling prescription drug in the U.S. in
1997, while Zantac, last year's winner, slipped to sixth place.
Sales of Prilosec, marketed by a joint venture between Sweden's Astra
Ab (Stockholm:ASTRa) and Merck & Co Inc (Nyse:MRK) , rose 31.0
percent in 1997 from 1996 levels, to $2.3 billion, according to IMS
America Ltd, a health care and pharmaceutical information company.
IMS collects its prescription data from drug stores, hospitals,
clinics, long term care facilities and HMOs.
Zantac, Glaxo Wellcome Plc's (Lse:GLXO) anti-ulcer drug, went off
patent last July and sales fell 37.7 percent to $1.1 billion in 1997.
A generic version of Zantac is now made by Novopharm Ltd of Canada.
Eli Lilly and Co's (Nyse:LLY) antidepressant, Prozac, marched to
second place from third, with 1997 sales of $1.9 billion, up 12.2
percent from the year before.
Zocor, Merck's cholesterol-lowering drug, leapfrogged to third place
with sales of $1.4 billion, up 35.9 percent from last year. Zocor was
in sixth place last year, behind Epogen and Zoloft, which remain in
fourth and fifth places, respectively.
Epogen, a booster of red blood cell count made by Amgen Inc
(Nasdaq:AMGN) , had sales of $1.2 billion in 1997, up 0.9 percent.
Sales of Zoloft, Pfizer Inc's (Nyse:PFE) antidepressant, rose 8.9
percent to $1.2 billion.
