I use Dragon in my office, and although I type fairly well, this product saves me time. Since you had such a bad experience, you could have a hardware problem-- maybe a sound card that isn't optimal for voice recognition. If Dragon is slow and makes a lot of errors, check out your sound card. Even fast machines with a bad sound card will seem slow and make a lot of errors. See the following response by Fred Mah to a question I posed on the Dream Machine thread here on SI a while back (reply #352).

Expensive sound cards may be optimized for games-- that is -- for output of sound. Microphone input on the sound card might not be adequate for voice recognition.

I've noticed that the software sellers, including Dragon and IBM Via Voice, offer the minimum system requirements to run their software. But it's more difficult to find recommendations for optimizing a computer system for voice recognition. If anyone has insights on an optimal system, I'd like to hear from you-- John.
