NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTOR CORP said it will put an entire PC system on a single chip by mid-1999, a move that should dramatically lower the cost of PCs for manufacturers and consumers. The single chip would replace the 12 or more separate chips typically found in a PC today and expand the entry-level market for PCs. National said its PC on a chip is being built around microprocessor cores developed by Cyrix, the processor company it acquired in November. National plans to make the chips at its new wafer fabrication facility in Maine on 0.25-micron process technology that can be further scaled down to 0.18 micron. National said it is defining versions of the chip for major PC and information appliance makers.(Reuters 08:07 AM ET 04/06/98)

Justice Department investigators believe they have enough evidence to bring a new antitrust case against MICROSOFT CORP. before the end of the month, the Wall Street Journal reported. The new case, if it goes forward, would allege "illegal maintenance and extension" of Microsoft's control of personal-computer operating software, in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act, the Journal said, citing unnamed people close to the probe. The investigators are taking final depositions from senior Microsoft officials and issued new civil subpoenas last week to major PC makers, including COMPAQ COMPUTER CORP. Computer billionaire Paul Allen has agreed to acquire Dallas-based Marcus Cable Co., the nation's largest closely held operator of cable-television systems, for about $2 billion, plus the assumption of $1 billion in debt, the Wall Street Journal reported. The deal, the first of what is expected to be a series of cable purchases by the MICROSOFT CORP co-founder is expected to be announced Monday, the Journal said, citing unnamed people close to the matter. Allen is believed to be paying 14 times trailing 12 months' cash flow for the nation's ninth-largest cable operator, the paper said. Allen recently sold $1.1 billion of Microsoft shares. U.S. Justice Department lawyers building a case against MICROSOFT CORP want to file new charges against the company before its Windows 98 operating software is released, a person familiar with the probe said. But there are no indications that the head of the antitrust division, Joel Klein, has reached a decision on whether to bring a new case. The new charges, if they are brought, would be far broader and harder to prove, according to legal experts on both sides of the case. Microsoft's lawyers have been tough and contentious in court, and if that style continued, the battle would require huge resources from the Justice Department. Microsoft Corporation (MSFT)
MICROSOFT CORP executives remain confident the company's Windows 98 operating system upgrade will launch as scheduled June 25 despite a federal antitrust investigation, a company spokesman said after market close. "We don't believe there's any scenario that would delay the release of Windows 98 with all of its Internet capabilities included," spokesman Mark Murray said. Murray said the company is working closely with U.S. Justice Department investigators and is open to discussions with the agency over any potential problems with Windows 98, the successor to Windows 95.
